Which battery storage will you choose?

Consider the key factors, 'Depth of Discharge' and 'Cycle Life', both of which are critical when determining the lifespan of your battery. Understanding these factors and then looking at the purchase, installation and maintenance costs, it becomes very clear which battery type and furthermore which battery brand offers the best value for money.

'Depth of discharge' (DOD) refers to the degree that a battery can be emptied relative to its capacity. It is a critical factor when...

comparing and evaluating battery types. All batteries suffer from degradation (damage), some more than others. In some batteries such as the lead-acid type, degradation occurs at a greater rate if the battery is set up to discharge at greater rates. These batteries must be set up at a lower DoD and therefore the usable power is much less than the battery's actual capacity. In other batteries such as the lithium-ion type, DoD can be set to 80-90% without great degradation and therefore there is a much greater availability of the battery's capacity. A 'cycle' refers to one charge and discharge. A battery that guarantees a great number of cycles is a good thing, right?

Yes, but... are you forgetting about the DoD? What if one cycle only gives you a limited amount of a battery's capacity because DoD must be set at a smaller percentage due to degradation? Good question.

Ideally, you want a battery that guarantees you a great number of cycles AND a higher DoD. This way your battery can be charged and discharged a great number of times and you know you are receiving a large percentage of the battery's power capacity.   • Require additional components to ensure safe operation (eg. pumps)
  • Require regular monitoring and maintenance of components and pumps

Lead-acid battery

  • Use poisonous material, lead, for both anode and cathode
  • Use a dangerous and hazardous liquid, sulfuric acid, for electrolyte solution
  • Need to be connected in a banked configuration and use a large number of batteries to achieve this
  • Require very large storage area
  • Require good ventilation to avoid build-up of toxic fumes
  • Poor lifespan
  • Large capacity is required to ensure usable power supply at low depth of discharge.

Other lithium-ion battery

  • May use thousands of smaller cylindrical style battery technology (eg. AA-size batteries)
  • Cylindrical battery technology used in battery storage sees battery lifespan considerably reduced
  • May not represent best value for money when considering initial cost and lifespan
  • Many other lithium-ion battery storage products are heavy, bulky, and require large storage areas
  • Some other lithium-ion battery storage do not provide varied installation options (eg. wall-mount or stand)
